The Show Must Go On...

Hello, Whilst the stress of finishing the dissertation surrounds me, a crack of light was seen because of a meeting about the show. It kicks off on the 10th for two weeks, which is plenty of time to sell our wares. I really wanted the show to be in Bristol, but I don't think anyone else apart from James and Lou are bothered about that.

During the meeting roles were decided, but no one was placed as overall show manager, so everyone had someone to go to. This may have offered a little more cohesion when it comes to the designs and styles. I haven't been set a distinct task yet, but I am willing to do anything, starting with moving all the furniture of the lab. As time manager, Liz is responsible for organizing peoples individual show times, and ensuring their is someone presesnt at all times to answer an questions the public may have.

Lou and myself hope to invite the people who have helped us out over the course of the project, as well as good old friends and family.

CV me?

This is the second time I've written this entry because blogger is shite!!

Not only was the importance of a good CV and portfolio discussed today, but also the major factor of luck!

By chatting to people and not being shy, you are more likely to find work and oppourtuites. A hub of influence is someone that everyone seems to know. This is the person to talk to or become. Thoughout the project I have tried to contact as many locative media designers as possible, as this is the best way to know what is happening in the industry. This has paid off no end, as Lou and myself have worked in some way with; HP, Mobile Bristol, Node, BBC Wales, Habour Authority and c3imaging.

Completing a positional staement was aslo sighted as an appropriate way of informing someone who you are. Questions that should be answered as: What you've done? Where you are now? What the work would mean to you? Statements like "I am someone who can....." are also a good way of getting yourself accross.

Anyway, sorry if this entry is short but things are never as good the second time around!

Here is a copy of my current CV that needs a major rework!

Peter Appleton

Stuarts old (not in age) lecturer came to chat to us today. Partly to see what we think of our course, as he is the external examiner, and partly to sell the International Centre for Digital Content in Liverpool.

He showed some of his own work, as well as the stuff that the course produces, and both were pretty good. I was really interested in the Sound in Situation project which invloved attaching data, via solar powered posts, that triggered when people approached. This is very similar to the work that Lou and myself are producing, but it is static, and cannot be attached to anything and everything. Thats the good thing about LM is that it doesnt effect the envirment at all, so Greenpeace would love it!

Here is a short bio of Peters work :

Peter Appleton was born Liverpool, England in 1945.

After a Foundation Course at Chester College of Art 1973-74 he did a BA in Fine Art at Newcastle upon Tyne University 1974-78. He worked as an oil rigger 1978-79 and then as part-time 3D designer in the Greek Museum, University of Newcastle upon Tyne1979-80 before doing an MA in Fine Art, Newcastle upon Tyne University 1980-82. He now lives in Exeter, where he has taught part-time at Sheffield College of Art, Exeter College of Art, Falmouth School of Art and is currently Course Leader, Interactive Arts, University of Wales College, Newport

Combining sound and sculpture with an element of participation, Peter Appleton is one of the pioneers of a new form of sculpture, shown at the Arnolfini, Bristol 1985, and then nationwide, in the exhibition A Noise In Your Eye.

Peter Appleton was one of three Artists-in-Residence in the Forest during 1986 He has received UK Fellowships and awards from Regional Arts Boards and has had One-person shows in many parts of England and in The Netherlands.

We also had a chat with Simon today about what we could do when the course is finished, the options are Masters, Mphil, or dole! I think I mightopt for the middle one! We'll see!

Richard Shotton

Co-founder of Imagine Education, Richard Shotton, came into the lab to chat with us today. A large proportion of the class are interested in the use of media within education. I wouldn't say that its my favorite area, but Richard made it all sound very interesting. He told us about the current methods employed by schools to teach i.e. A teacher tells a pupil everything they know, and expects them to remember it all. Unfortunately humans are not hard drives and will not just recall all this data. Instead, what Imagine Ed try to do is get pupils to engage with whatever their learning, using IT providing a far more enriching experience.

I would really like to tie this idea in with our own locative media area. Using IT to learn is a very big aspect of LM, especially when it utilizes the huge resource of public authoring.

Mr. Shotton believes that when pupils have the chance to process the information they are ingesting then not only do they become smarter, but they become more imaginative, resourceful and creative. Ultimately, countries that use this theory will have economies that benefit, unlike the United States.

EPP - Gavin Johnson

One of BBC Wales New Media team leaders came into speak with the class today. Gavin Johnson has seen technological advancements change how the BBC works and delivers its vast amounts of content to the general public.

Gavin spoke about the BBCs role in streaming video as opposed to letting users download it directly and the legal implications this has. He also informed us of a few 'up-and-comings' that the BeeB is involved in - podcasting trials, Integrated Media Player trials and the new search engine which allows multimedia content to be searched for more efficiently.

I asked Gavin about the field Lou and myself are working in, and he told me about a project called 'Streets of Cardiff', which is a public authoring platform for the people of Cardiff. The producers in charge of overseeing the project was a man called Robin Moore, so I will contact him asap.

Design for Change: Presentation Day

What a long old day today has been!

All the presentations were completed in one day instead of the intended two. It wasn't as bad as some of the previous presentation days however, I think this was because everyone was presenting something different.
Also, everyone had a sound knowledge of their design or product, which meant I learnt a lot.

I was up second and found the 20 mins went really quickly. I think this might have had something to do with the audience participation I involved in my presentation.

1. Spinning Jack around on a chair and then asking him to find himself on a park map.

2. Liz and Lou acting in a role-play to show the advantages and disadvantages of renting my Interactive Services Explorer.

I'd like to thank Jack, Liz and Lou for their help to explain how the device works.

Here is a pdf of my presentation which documents all the research and development of the tourist aid - Presentation pdf

Right, well I'm off for a dinner meeting with Walt. Wish me luck!
